Overview
For Commissioned Security Officers needing to demonstrate firearm proficiency and complete required Continuing Education (CE) requirements.
You might be able to get your Texas License to Carry Handgun (LTC) Handgun with a little extra time and nominal charge.
You may purchase the full P³TC Security Officer Training Manual for only $30.
“Please be advised under the Private Security Act (Occ. Code Chapter 1702) and Administrative Rule 35.4 (37 Tex. Admin. Code 1), a criminal conviction may disqualify you from a Commission or license under the Act. You may wish to review Rule 35.4’s list of disqualifying offenses and the related periods of ineligibility, available on the department’s website at www.dps.texas.gov/rsd/psb/index.htm (click on the link to Administrative Code). You also have a right to request from the department a criminal history evaluation letter under Occupations Code Section 53.102.”
License Renewal (1702.302 TOC)
(d) A person whose license has been expired for one year or more may not renew the license.
*A $25 FBI background check is required for all renewals.* (35.22 TAC) This is charged by, and done by the State.
Security Officer Commission Renewal (1702.309 TOC, 35.83 TAC)
(a) … Only a board-approved instructor may administer the CE course… at least six hours of instruction…
(b) … must demonstrate the proficiency required under Section 1702.1685 within the 90-day period before the date the Commission is renewed.
Continuing Education Requirements (35.161 TAC)
(a) A license or Commission may not be renewed until required CE credits have been earned …
(g) Commissioned Security Officers and Personal Protection Officers shall complete six (6) hours of CE. …
… Commissioned Security Officers shall submit a firearms proficiency certificate [through TOPS] along with the renewal application.
You are responsible for turning in the required certificate(s) to your Company Representative and application(s) through TOPS. Do not depend on others.
